The Short Answer, By Household

One person streaming and browsing: 25–50 Mbps. A couple with 4K and calls: 50–100 Mbps. A family of four with mixed heavy use: 100–300 Mbps. Gigabit pays off only for frequent large downloads or very large households — for everyone else it buys headroom you'll rarely touch.

The reason speed quizzes feel vague is that they hide the arithmetic. Bandwidth need is just addition: each simultaneous activity consumes a known slice, the slices sum to your peak, and a 25% buffer absorbs bursts and background traffic. Why the 25% Headroom Rule

Summing your activities gives a clean number that real networks never quite deliver. Three taxes eat into it: protocol overhead (5–10% of any connection carries headers, not content), burst traffic (app updates, cloud sync, and phone backups fire without asking), and Wi-Fi loss (walls and distance routinely cost 20–30% versus a cable). Adding 25% on top of your computed peak absorbs the first two; testing over ethernet isolates the third.

The corollary: if your plan already exceeds your peak-plus-headroom and things still stutter, more Mbps won't fix it — the bottleneck is latency, Wi-Fi, or a single overloaded device. How many Mbps does a family of 4 need?
A typical family of four — two HD streams, one 4K stream, a video call, and casual gaming running simultaneously — generates roughly 45–60 Mbps of peak demand. With 25% headroom for bursts and background traffic, a 100 Mbps plan covers it comfortably; 200–300 Mbps adds margin for heavy downloaders.
Is 100 Mbps enough for 4 people?
Usually yes. 100 Mbps supports about four simultaneous 4K streams in raw bandwidth, so mixed household use (streaming + calls + browsing + gaming) fits with room to spare. The exceptions are frequent large downloads — games, video projects — where more speed directly cuts waiting time.
How much bandwidth does 4K streaming need?
Netflix currently publishes 15 Mbps for 4K, while YouTube publishes 20 Mbps for 4K UHD. This calculator budgets a conservative 25 Mbps per stream to leave room for bitrate spikes and other traffic, so two simultaneous 4K streams reserve 50 Mbps before the household headroom is added.
Do smart home devices need much bandwidth?
Individually, almost none — thermostats, plugs, and speakers idle at a few Kbps. Budget ~0.5 Mbps per device for occasional updates and bursts. The exception is security cameras that continuously upload video: allow 2–4 Mbps of upload per camera.
How much upload speed do I need?
Video calls are the main driver: about 3 Mbps of upload per simultaneous HD call (per Zoom's published requirements). Cloud backup and game streaming raise the bar further. A practical floor is 10 Mbps upload; households that live on video calls or upload content should target 20+ Mbps.
Why is gaming lag not fixed by more Mbps?
Because online gaming uses very little bandwidth (3–6 Mbps) but is extremely sensitive to latency — the round-trip time of each packet. A 1 Gbps plan with 80 ms ping feels worse in a shooter than a 50 Mbps plan with 15 ms ping. If gaming feels laggy, measure ping first, bandwidth second.
