Why the Confusion Exists at All

The split is historical, not a conspiracy. Telegraph and telephone engineering measured transmission in individual pulses — bits — because that's what a wire physically carries, one at a time. When computer networking arrived, it inherited the bits-per-second convention wholesale. Storage engineering developed separately around the byte, because one byte encodes one character of text — the natural unit for measuring information kept, rather than information moving.

For decades the two systems never had to meet in consumer life. Then home internet put a network interface in every house, and suddenly the same person sees both units daily: the plan they bought (bits) and the files they download (bytes). Marketing does play a supporting role — providers have no incentive to switch to the 8×-smaller byte figure — but the underlying convention predates internet advertising entirely.
