How to Convert Mbps to Kbps

Multiply megabits per second by 1,000. 1 Mbps = 1,000 Kbps, so 7.5 Mbps = 7,500 Kbps, 20 Mbps = 20,000 Kbps, and 100 Mbps = 100,000 Kbps.

Kbps = Mbps × 1,000

Mbps and Kbps are decimal bit-rate units. A megabit contains 1,000 kilobits, so multiplying by 1,000 changes the scale without changing the underlying bandwidth or bitrate. No bits are added or removed.

Is 1 Mbps 1,000 or 1,024 Kbps?

1 Mbps is exactly 1,000 Kbps. The SI prefix kilo means 10³ and mega means 10⁶. Therefore one megabit contains 1,000 kilobits, and adding “per second” to both units does not change that ratio.

1,024 Kbps

1,024 is a binary scaling number. Binary prefixes must be labeled kibi, mebi and so on.

Using 1,024 gives the wrong answer: for example, it would turn 4 Mbps into 4,096 Kbps instead of the correct 4,000 Kbps. NIST states that alternative binary definitions of the SI prefixes are not permitted.

Kbps vs kB/s and KiB/s

The letter case and the “i” matter. Kbps is a decimal bit rate; kB/s is a decimal byte rate; KiB/s is a binary byte rate. They are not interchangeable.

You may also see kilobits per second written as kbps, kbit/s or kbits/s, and megabits per second as Mbps or Mbit/s. Those spelling variants do not change the ×1,000 conversion.

How Much Data Does a Kbps Bitrate Use per Hour?

At a constant rate, multiply Kbps by 0.45 to get decimal MB per hour. The derivation is Kbps × 1,000 bits × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per Byte ÷ 1,000,000 Bytes per MB. This calculates the data represented by the sustained bitrate; protocol, container and retransmission overhead can add more transferred data.
