Mbps to Bytes was built for one surprisingly common moment: a speed test says “100 Mbps,” while a download app reports “12.5 MB/s.” Those numbers describe the same ideal transfer rate in different units—bits versus bytes.
Today the site includes converters, download-time and bandwidth-planning tools, and practical guides for interpreting internet speeds and data usage. Our goal is to give a direct answer first, then show the assumptions and arithmetic behind it.
How our calculations work
- Networking rates use SI units: 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits per second and 1 byte = 8 bits.
- Decimal and binary storage stay distinct: MB/GB use powers of 1,000; MiB/GiB use powers of 1,024.
- Theoretical and real-world results are labeled: protocol overhead, Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, server limits, and device performance can reduce observed throughput.
- Recommendations identify their basis: we distinguish a platform’s published minimum from our more conservative planning allowance.
The formulas, assumptions, and source hierarchy are documented in our calculation methodology and editorial standards.
Editorial review and corrections
Content is produced and maintained by the Mbps to Bytes Editorial Team. For changing facts—such as streaming requirements, video-call bandwidth, or broadband benchmarks—we prefer current first-party documentation from the service or standards body. Calculations are independently rechecked before publication, and materially updated pages show a review date.
If you find an error, send the page URL and supporting source through the contact page. We acknowledge substantive correction reports and aim to verify them within 48 hours.
What we care about
