Editorial Standards
We take numerical accuracy seriously. A wrong conversion factor can make someone believe their internet provider is cheating them, give a student a wrong answer, or lead a sysadmin to under-provision a server. So every article and every calculator on this site goes through the process below before it goes live.
Our 5-Step Editorial Process
1. Topic Research
Before writing, we research what readers actually need. We analyze search queries, "People Also Ask" data, Reddit and Stack Exchange discussions (r/HomeNetworking, Super User), and existing competitor content. The goal is to identify what's missing or poorly explained elsewhere — and fill that gap.
2. Formula & Standards Verification
Every formula and conversion factor is cross-referenced against at least two authoritative sources, including:
- NIST — prefixes for binary multiples (the official definitions of KB vs KiB, MB vs MiB)
- IEC 80000-13 — the international standard for information-technology units
- Official platform documentation for real-world figures (e.g., Netflix and YouTube published bandwidth requirements)
3. Calculation Check
Every worked example is calculated twice — once by the writer, once independently by the reviewer, using the same double-checked factors our calculators use (see our Methodology). Numbers must match exactly. When we round, we say so explicitly and state the rounding precision.
4. Real-World Figures Check
When we reference real-world numbers — streaming bitrates, typical game download sizes, ISP plan speeds — we use the provider's published documentation or widely verifiable data, never guesses. If a figure isn't widely known, we cite the source directly in the article.
5. Plain Language Review
A final read-through removes jargon, fixes awkward phrasing, and makes sure the explanation works for the intended reader — usually a non-engineer trying to answer one specific question, like "why does my 100 Mbps plan download at 12.5 MB/s?"
Use of AI in Our Content
We use AI tools to assist with research, drafting, and structuring. All AI-assisted content is reviewed and fact-checked by a human editor before publishing. We disclose this openly because:
- Hiding AI use while presenting content as purely human-written violates reader trust.
- Google's guidance permits AI-assisted content that is helpful, accurate, and human-reviewed.
- What matters isn't whether AI touched the draft — it's whether the math is right and the explanation is clear.
Our Accuracy Promise
If you find an error in any article or calculator on this site:
- Report it through our contact page.
- We'll verify within 48 hours.
- If you're correct, we'll fix the error and credit you in the article (with your permission).
- We'll add a correction notice to the article showing what changed and when.
How We Update Content
Conversion math doesn't change, but our explanations and real-world references sometimes do. Articles are reviewed and updated when:
- A reader reports an error or unclear section.
- We find a better way to explain a concept.
- Real-world figures change (streaming platform requirements, typical plan speeds, game sizes).
- Calculator improvements affect linked content.
Every article shows two dates: Published and Last Reviewed.
What We Don't Do
- We don't publish content we haven't verified.
- We don't accept paid placements disguised as editorial content.
- We don't fabricate author credentials or experience.
- We don't cite sources we haven't read.
- We don't use clickbait headlines that misrepresent the content.
- We don't display fabricated ratings, reviews, or trust badges.
Conflicts of Interest
If an article ever recommends a specific product or service (for example, a router or an ISP), we will disclose any affiliate relationship at the top of that article. Recommendations are based on accuracy, utility, and reader value — never on compensation. As of today, this site contains no affiliate links and no sponsored content.
