In broadband and networking shorthand, “gig” normally means 1 Gbps. Therefore, an “Mbps to gig” conversion uses the same rule: divide Mbps by 1,000.

Mbps vs Gbps: What Is the Difference?

Mbps and Gbps both measure bit rate—how many bits can move each second. Gbps is the larger label: one gigabit per second equals 1,000 megabits per second. Changing the unit does not make a connection faster; it only rewrites the same rate at a different decimal scale.

Capitalization matters: Gbps uses a lowercase b for bits, while GB/s uses an uppercase B for bytes. Because one byte contains eight bits, 1 Gbps is theoretically 125 MB/s—not 1 GB/s. Why Can a 1 Gbps Speed Test Show About 940 Mbps?

The unit conversion remains exact: 1 Gbps always equals 1,000 Mbps. A speed test measures delivered application throughput, not merely the nominal link rate. Ethernet framing, IP and transport headers, acknowledgements, test traffic, device processing, and the remote server all use part of the available capacity. That is why a wired result around 930–950 Mbps can be normal on a 1 Gbps path.

Converting Mbps and Gbps is exact; delivering the line rate depends on the complete path. The router WAN and LAN ports, switch, network adapter, cable or optical module, device, and remote endpoint must all sustain the required rate. The slowest negotiated link is the ceiling.
