How Many MB in a GB?

1 GB = 1,000 MB in decimal (SI) units — the official definition, used by drives, phones, and data plans. The famous 1,024 belongs to the binary system: 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB, used for RAM and by Windows file listings. Both are correct in their own context — the mistake is mixing them.

Why does my 128 GB phone show less available storage?
Two reasons stack up. The operating system and pre-installed apps consume 10–20 GB before you store anything. And if the file manager counts in binary while the box uses decimal, 128 GB displays as about 119 "GB" (really GiB). Nothing is missing — it is accounting, not shrinkage.
Which is bigger, MB or GB?
GB is bigger — 1,000× bigger in decimal units. A megabyte holds about one minute of MP3 audio or a third of a smartphone photo; a gigabyte holds roughly 250 photos or an hour of standard-definition video.
